Hence, ‘men’ require a positive impetus to get to work and avoid fornication. God, Malthus argues, provides such an impetus in the form of hunger, scarcity and want. In response to this ‘positive’ impetus toward rectifying man’s indolence in the form of hunger and want, ‘man’ must work to get food to satisfy hunger; if there is too much procreation/fornication, then great, and it has to be said indiscriminate, suffering and starvation will result, thereby providing positive sanctions against what Malthus considers an excessive amount of sexual activity.

In order to fully appreciate Descartes’ philosophical ‘mash-up’, and also make it more fun to reflect on what he was doing, let’s use an example from more contemporary times and popular culture to explore these ideas. For this, I will refer to the 1999 film The Matrix. Try this thought experiment: the blue pill or the red pill (from The Matrix (1999), scene 8, if readers are interested in watching). How do we know that what we experience as the real world is actually real? In the past, people were compelled to answer such questions by admitting that they couldn’t ever really know that any of these things wasn’t actually the case.

God created human beings to be free, and by implication this means we are free to choose to disobey His divine will and/or the moral law, that is, free to do evil. Evil exists in the world because for some reason or other, we choose to do it, as we are free to do. And, hence, we are to the ones to suffer (although again, in the mythic tradition of scripture, it would appear that God suffers too as a result of our bad deeds, and indeed is capable of inflicting pain and suffering on His creation).
