Mad Meg by Sally Morrison

By Sally Morrison

In the realm of Mad Meg, existence is fed on by means of paintings. the current is unalterably colored by way of the silences, loyalties and betrayals of the past.

Isobel attempts to solve the secrets and techniques of her mom and dad: her type yet loopy mom, Stella, and her rogue yet dearly enjoyed father, Henri. Her campaigning sister, Allegra, struggles with the realities of the passing of time as she is drawn right into a maelstrom of protestation and parenthood.

Sally Morrison's vintage, award-winning novel attracts the reader via a tangle of intersecting lives set opposed to a tapestry of twentieth-century eu politics.

Mad Meg explores the gaps among offerings and compulsions, artists and phonies, and kinship and friendship.

See Now Then

In See Now Then, the bright and evocative new novel from Jamaica Kincaid—her first in ten years—a marriage is printed in all its joys and agonies. This piercing exam of the manifold ways that the passing of time operates at the human recognition unfolds gracefully, and Kincaid inhabits each one of her characters—a mom, a father, and their young ones, dwelling in a small village in New England—as they stream, of their personal minds, among the current, the previous, and the long run: for, as she writes, "the current can be now then and the prior is now then and the longer term may be a now then.

Me reí.

Cf. Lynn-George (1988) 272: “In its tale of the past for the future – already belated, after the event, and always ahead of itself, telling what is still to come – the epic compounds a sense of finitude with a sense of the indefinite. 638–40. Cf. de Jong (1987) 53–60; and Richardson (1990) 174–78, who suggests that the narrator is putting his audience into his own shoes: “‘If you could be the narrator and could see what I am seeing’” (176). For the use of this device in Latin, see Kilmartin (1975).

In fact, you cannot tell two stories at the exact same time, no matter what their temporal sequence. But various verbal cues are available, either on the part of the narrator or one of his characters, to indicate whether an event occurred prior to or after another action. And as we have seen, in the context of epic performance, references to the future in relation to the story time may point to the hic et nunc of performance. Thus Helen can refer to her future incorporation into the song we are hearing.

Similarly, the quarrel on Olympus that easily dissolves into waves of laughter at the end of Book 1 does not so much follow the baneful terrestrial strife of Agamemnon and Achilles as stand in contrast to it. 58 Caught up amid the trees, they rarely glance up at the grand forest of Homer’s temporal strategies. 59 To give only the most obvious examples: the replay of Paris’ seduction of Helen and the duel between her two husbands in Book 3, not to speak of the notoriously misplaced Catalogue of Ships 58 59 It is perhaps worth pointing out that Zielinski himself suggested that his study was largely a means to a further end.
