See Now Then

In See Now Then, the bright and evocative new novel from Jamaica Kincaid—her first in ten years—a marriage is published in all its joys and agonies. This piercing exam of the manifold ways that the passing of time operates at the human awareness unfolds gracefully, and Kincaid inhabits every one of her characters—a mom, a father, and their teenagers, dwelling in a small village in New England—as they stream, of their personal minds, among the current, the prior, and the long run: for, as she writes, "the current can be now then and the earlier is now then and the long run may be a now then.

Me reí.

He heaved a sigh, saliv^ collecting at the corners of his pouting lips, and gazed with shining glazed-over eyes at the cadets’ strongly rounded, slightly splayed buttocks. ‘When I got caught, I was sleeping with someone just like them,’ he said, mortification suddenly flooding over his face. ‘Eh? You can’t call yourself a prostitute over a handful of hard tack,’ I said. ’ ‘Huh,’ he said absent-mindedly and went forward, push ing his mates aside to take a closer look at those who might have been his clients before his imprisonment.

Don’t move, don’t move at all. Then the trolley started. Carrying us, it advanced slowly along the track across the deep valley, trembling softly, advancing into an intense stifling miasma of tree bark and buds, into the expanse of forest on the far side, darker than the valley floor. And the winter night’s dry, hard air wrapped itself tightly around the skip sliding along the narrow unstable track, the youngsters wedged in inside, and the wire rope hauling them. I stretched my arm between jam-packed bodies, groping for and finding my brother’s small soft palm and squeezed it tightly.

It’s all right,’ he said in a feverish tone, his feelings clearly hurt. ’ Having half risen, I lay down again and heard him go down onto the earth floor and try to open the low door that led outside. He seemed to be having trouble. He repeated his futile efforts a few times, then after tut-tutting, came back to me, plainly at a loss. ‘It’s locked from the outside,’ he said, disappointed. ’ said Minami in a loud voice which charged the air in the room with tension. ’ He jumped down on the earth floor and attacked the low door violently, but against our expectations he only spat out filthy abuse.
