She was, it turns out, only the first of several Famous Chopin Scholars, like Helen Taylor and Bernie Koloski, whose work on Chopin not only smoothed my own scholarly way but also paved paths to friendship. The Newberry Library was, of course, a more conventional but equally helpful resource for writing about Kate Chopin.

Chopin understood her market. It is no surprise that writers are driven by “the commercial instinct”— as Chopin rather ruefully acknowledges in her diary of 18945—but it’s still quite unusual to see that instinct played out so explicitly. Indeed, I am unaware of any comparable record by any other nineteenth-century writer. When I finally got to see and study and turn the pages of her account books myself, I was struck by their calculation and detail—at least after I figured out how to decipher their construction.
