The Formation outcrops over 22 km and averages 150 m in thickness, doubled in places by folding. Two main deposits occur, centred on the two peaks of Caue and Conceia~ao. Both are composed of various ore types as follows. Itabirite. Though not always regarded as ore, the primary rock of the Caue Formation is worked when rich enough or easily concentrated.

Small deposits of conglomerate of Cretaceous age are found in depressions on the flanks of the iron ranges, the only record of the long period of erosion and weathering which may have been responsible for forming some of the iron ores. In the Quaternary the whole region was heavily glaciated, forming the present topography and leaving behind an extensive and, in places, thick mantle of till. A little ore occurs in Cretaceous conglomerates on the lower slopes of the range, sometimes lying on the Virginia Formation.
