I broke my thumb against the Eagles, after which, under the guidance of Ernie Stautner, I drank boilermakers all night, walking right out of the bar across the street from the hotel and getting onto the team bus the Page 14 next morning. Parker smiled as I stumbled aboard under Ernie's stewardship. At least my thumb didn't hurt. I played badly on special teams the following two games against the Colts in Atlanta and the Lions in Detroit, fighting the pain of the heavily taped thumb. The last night of the last week, not having shown much the previous games, fearing that I'd be cut, the Steelers asked me to attend an Elk Lodge meeting over in their building on the North Side.
