In part, perhaps, this circumstance may have reflected the fact that many excitements burned themselves out in just a few years or even months, which meant that those who took part spent far less time in the Washoe or the Colorado Rockies or the Coeur d’Alene than had their predecessors in California. For them, the associations with Nevada or Idaho or Montana were far more attenuated than the ties that many of the Argonauts had felt with California. Moreover, while unchecked optimism about instant wealth for anyone still ran rampant at the beginning of each new rush, the intractable geology of later bonanza sites usually could only be overcome with the capital- and technologically intensive methods of hard-rock underground mining.
